Renowned British healthcare leader joins Clerkenwell Health as Therapy Lead

Clerkenwell Health strengthens clinical delivery team with the appointment of senior leader in mental healthcare, Dr Sarah Bateup, as Therapy Lead.

The new appointment brings first-class expertise in therapy and digital health as Clerkenwell Health builds the commercial infrastructure needed to make the UK a global centre of psychedelic research and innovation.

As Therapy Lead, Dr Sarah Bareup will design Clerkenwell Health’s therapist training programme, lead recruitment and training sessions, and ensure consistent delivery of therapy during trials. She will also help design the patient and therapist supporting app.

Previously, Sarah was Chief Clinical Officer at ieso Digital Health and Head of Therapy Research and Training at COMPASS. She has been recognised for her clinical leadership in transforming mental healthcare by being named as one of the top 50 female leaders in healthcare in 2018, and top 100 business leaders in 2019.

Sarah is an experienced therapist and teacher, having delivered over 30,000 hours of evidence-based therapy and taught at Kings College, London and Exeter University. She was drawn to the field of psychedelic-assisted therapy in 2019 following her passion for exploring new ways of amplifying the efficacy of mental health treatments.

After gaining a Master in Education and a PGCE, Sarah became interested in how technology could be used to amplify the effect of learning both in the classroom and in the therapy room. She pioneered new ways of delivering feedback to trainee therapists.

Sarah also studied therapist variables in her Doctorate. Her research included the development of clinical design support tools, digital biomarkers, digital mental health innovation and an understanding of the active ingredients in evidence-based psychological therapies.

Tom McDonald, Clerkenwell Health CEO said, “Having delivered over 30,000 hours of therapy Sarah is a huge asset to the team. She is also one of the only people in the world who has recruited, trained and monitored legal psychedelic-assisted therapists and shares our vision for using technology to augment traditional talking therapies.”

Dr Sarah Bateup added, “This is an incredibly exciting time in the field of psychedelic-assisted therapy. It’s a huge privilege to join such a talented team. I truly believe that we have the capacity to be a leading player in developing therapy models that have the potential to amplify the effect of mental healthcare.”

Sarah’s leadership and expertise in the sector will better equip Clerkenwell Health for bringing clinical trial innovation to psychedelic-assisted therapy.
